Two Buildings, Stokes St Preston

DESCRIPTION

This project comprised two buildings – 3 & 4 storey, containing a total of 68 apartments in an affordable housing project for the Department of Health and Human Services over two adjacent sites in Preston. Designed by Billard Leece Partnership and engineered by Irwinconsult, the development was designed for lightweight timber framed construction.


Site 1 is a 3 storey building containing 22 dwellings; Site 4 is a four storey building containing 46 dwellings.The nature of the project was to provide affordable housing at a suitable scale in the area, with steel portal frames and engineered timber joists supporting Autoclaved Aerated Concrete flooring and timber stud walls in the construction. The brief was to deliver the outcome in a tight program.


Constructed by long-established commercial builders, S J Higgins, this project is one of their first using an engineered timber structural solution.
