Vertical Extension, Adaptive Reuse
79-81 Palmerston Cres. South Melbourne
DESCRIPTION
This was a challenge of adaptive reuse for an existing 1960’s, three level office building into a residential development. It involved construction of an additional 3 levels on top of the existing structure. Structurally this was only possible with lightweight construction utilising a steel frame and timber joists. This solved the reuse of the existing footings with no underpinning required.
The project designed by Elevli Architects involved the vertical addition of three levels onto the existing face brick building, gutting the internals and conversion to residential use. The project was contracted as a D&C project and comprised a total of 12 apartments.
